Types Of Nannies
There are so many different options when it comes to hiring a Nanny, it is a good idea to sit down and make a list of what it is you think your family needs. You would need to consider how many hours per day or week you need, if you want someone to live in with you or live away from your family home. What duties you would like the Nanny to do during her day and what may be delegated to someone else. Then there is experience, it is natural to want the highest amount of experience, just note that the more experience comes with a higher wage. You can read below the examples of some Nanny types;
Nanny Housekeepers
As you would expect, these nannies take care the children and the homel. They handle all of the child care duties like a usual nanny would, but they also are willing to perform housekeeping duties during nap or quiet time, or while the children are at school.
It’s important to come to an agreement on what kind of housekeeping is required; it’s also important to make sure you allow enough time for the housekeeping duties to be completed. Make sure her housekeeping duties don’t interfere with child care, which is naturally her first priority. Some families still hire a cleaner once a week for the deep cleaning, some don’t. A Nanny-Housekeeper can live in or out, just keep in mind that a dual role will come with a higher wage request. A live in Nanny-Housekeeper working 50-60 hours would cost around £750-900 gross per week, averaging £550-650 net.
Live-Out Nannies
These nannies work part (under 35 hours) or full time (over 35 hours) which can be spread across one day or six days per week and their duties focus exclusively on child care (play, bath time, meals, activities, homework, transportation, and so on) plus any child-related housekeeping (tidying toys, cleaning kitchen after cooking, children’s laundry). They do not reside in the family's home, nor do any non-child-related cleaning or housekeeping. All full-time nannies come with at least 3 years professional experience with children and most with specific training or education. Again experience decides salary, but generally you would start at around £15.00-16.00 Gross per hour for part time and £16.00-18.00 gross per hour for full time. This averages £12-13 net an hour.
Live-In Nannies
These nannies share the same responsibilities as live-out nannies but reside in the family's home. They can also be full time or part time too. Live-in nannies are to be provided with a furnished private bedroom, with use of the facilities of the home usually 365 days a year. A live in Nanny is to also to be provided with their food for the week by the family too. A live in Nanny does generally come with a lower salary to that of a live out. The most important thing when hiring a live in Nanny is to set the boundaries of working hours and respecting one another’s space when during non working hours. A live in Nanny will usually babysit one night a week as part of her contract too. A live is Nanny would cost around £350 gross per week, averaging £300 net for 25 hours - such as a before and after school live in Nanny. A full time, 50-60 hours a week Nanny would cost around £590-750 gross per week, average £450-550 net.
Rota Nannies
A rota nanny works in a team of two or more nannies for the same family. By doing this, the nanny family is then covered 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for their childcare needs. Rota nannies live in with the family or provided accommodation during their ‘on’ days and then return home or to the staff house during their ‘off’ days. The nanny is paid every week of the year, although she will tend to only work for half of the time. A usual rota schedule is 1 or 2 weeks on/off at a time, sometimes a month if doing lots of travel. If the family are based in London, it’s more typical to see a 3-5 day on/off schedule. A rota Nanny is usually paid in excess of £1300 per week, gross.
Holiday Nannies
These nannies provide help for parents who only need temporary care during the school holidays at home or whilst away on holiday with the family. These Nannies tend to come from teaching backgrounds or those in university as they tend to be off at the same time as the usual school holidays. Salaries will again vary depending on the type of duties wanted. If travelling with the Nanny, you will be expected to cover all travel costs and provide a private bedroom for the Nanny too. You would be looking at a figure of around £15.00 per hour for a holiday nanny, gross.
Nanny "Shares"
Sometimes, nannies are open to sharing her services with two families. If you know someone who is also looking for a nanny, talk to them about their needs and their budget for child care. Once you have all that established, you can interview a nanny who is open to or experienced in nanny sharing or caring for multiples. This saves money for both families while ensuring quality care from a trained nanny. Keep in mind that there are logistic issues; Where will the nanny go each day? Will you alternate houses? How will you handle paid time off, sick days, or when one family doesn’t need her? Who pays for the food/classes/travel related to the children’s care. A nanny share tends to cost more in total than a single family nanny, but the costs are split between the two families. For full time, you would be looking at £18.00-£20.00 per hour gross.
